Coral Coast – Western Australia

Monkey Mia

Monkey Mia is a popular tourist destination located about 900 km north of Perth, Western Australia. The reserve is 25 km northeast of the town of Denham in the Shark Bay Marine Park and World Heritage Site.

The area is known for bottlenose dolphins that come in close to shore. Apart from dolphins you may see dugongs, sharks, rays, turtles and a variety of fish in the water. Beside the water you are likely to meet pelicans and emus. Western grass wrens are often seen near the carpark.

Take some time to explore the area’s natural and cultural history along the Wulyibidi Yaninyina trail, a 1.5 km loop walk over dunes and along the beach. The walk is best done when the birds are most active just after sunrise or late in the afternoon.

Nambung National Park

While in the Australia’s Coral Coast region, make sure you visit the Nambung National Park and the Pinnacles. These amazing natural limestone structures, some standing as high as six metres, were formed approximately 25,000 to 30,000 years ago after the sea receded and left deposits of seashells.

Wild Flowers

Between July and September you will see some of Western Australia’s most breath taking wild flowers in this stunning area.

Pink Lake

Between Geraldton and Kalbarri is Port Gregory, where you will find the Pink Lake, also known as Hutt Lagoon. Located 515km north of Perth, the lake is neighboured by the picturesque Port Gregory; a small town renowned for its fishing. Hutt Lagoon’s iconic colouring comes from the presence of the caroteinoid-producing algae, dunaliella salina – which is a source of beta-carotene; a food-colouring agent and a great source of Vitamin A.

Lesueur National Park

One of the most significant reserves for flora conservation in Western Australia. 10% of the State’s known flora is found here, and several species which grow in Lesueur National Park cannot be found anywhere else in the world and have been included on an endangered list. Just 3 hours north of Perth along the Brand Highway or Midlands Route, visitors will witness an abundance of colour as wildflowers bloom spectacularly during wildflower season, from late July to October.
