The Best Things To Do in the Margaret River Region

Margaret River is a small town about 300 kilometres from Perth in Western Australia. The area is known for its craft breweries, boutiques and surrounding wineries. It’s beaches and world-renowned surf breaks along the nearby coast are also a draw card. The white sand and crystal-clear water are amazing. The unique location also has some of the best wineries, tall-timber forests, inland rivers, and ancient underground caves. Western Australia has some beautiful locations, and the Margaret River region is one of its best.
There are so many places to visit we’ve made a list of some of the best things to do in Margaret River.
Margaret River Wine Region
Margaret River is best known for its abundance of luxury wineries with approximately 90 cellar doors in the region alone, distilleries and food. We would recommend spending a few days in the region and hiring a car is the best way to get there, don’t worry you could always join a wine tour when you visit the wineries and leave your car at your accommodation.
Vasse Felix
Margaret Rivers founding wine Estate, set on a beautiful property with stretches of green grass and vineyards. The cellar door is home to a huge selection of wines that you can enjoy in the tasting room or wine lounge, as well as featuring an art gallery and wine museum. Make sure to stay there for a decadent meal paired with their wines overlooking the vineyard. There are a range of luxury tours you can book to discover the history of winemaking at Vasse Felix which dates back to 1967.
Stella Bella Wines
This is a small rather new winery close to the centre of town and they have a great selection of delicious wines. This is an ideal location If you aren’t looking for quality wine tasting and 5 course meals, or you could choose to instead pack yourself a picnic and head down to enjoy the view of the vineyard with your choice of Stella Bella wine. Did we mention you can even bring along your dog as long as they are on a leash!
Lenton Brae
If you are visiting the area with a larger group, this family-owned winery can accommodate large groups for both tours and tastings. This location has plenty of parking space and has family friendly outdoor area to spend the whole day. Lenton Brae also offers free shipping when you buy 12 bottles so if you fall in love with the wine, you can still enjoy it at home.
Voyager Estate
A winery and vineyard encompassing over 175 hectares of land, with 17 hectares dedicated to producing some of the finest wines in the region. The Estate produces a range of wines from its vineyards, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. In addition to producing great wine, Voyager Estate is renowned for its stunning surrounds. Set amongst rolling hills, the estate’s rustic cellars and homestead offer a tranquil and picturesque setting for a wine-tasting experience. See Stingrays Up Close at Hamelin Bay

Hamelin Bay is home to a healthy population of stingrays. You won’t want to miss the unique experience of see large numbers of stingrays up close. You can not only swim and enjoy the pristine beaches but also watch as stingrays come right up to the shoreline. Stingrays are nocturnal, and can be found resting in the shallow sandy areas during the day. During the night, they hunt for food such as shrimp, crabs, shells, and small fish in the shallow waters around the bay. Cape to Cape Track
The Cape to Cape Track is a 125-kilometre coastal walking track that spans the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, between Cape Naturalist in the north and Cape Leeuwin in the south, in the Margaret River Region of Western Australia. It runs through the coastal towns of Dunsborough, Yallingup, Gracetown, and Prevelly and meanders along spectacular beaches, through coastal scrub and tall forests, over dramatic headlands and provides access to awe-inspiring views into the Indian Ocean and sweeping coastline.
Margaret River Caves

A network of limestone caves can be found in Margaret River region of Western Australia. They include Mammoth Cave, Jewel Cave,Lake Cave, and Ngilgi Cave. Discovered in 1899, the caves are famous for their stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, rimstone pools, shawl formations, and other rock formations. Several of the caves are open to the public for tours, while some are restricted for research and educational purposes.
Jewel Cave is one of the biggest caves in Western Australia and is one of the most spectacular in the Margaret River Region. Filled with stalactites, fossils and more this cave appears to sparkle as you walk in and admire its dazzling beauty.

Gnarabup Beach
Located in the sheltered waters of Gnarabup Bay near the river mouth, about 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of the town of Margaret River. The beach is a hidden gem, and provides a secluded bay with crystal clear water and white sand, making it an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing. The waves at Margaret River Gnarabup beach can get quite large at the peak of the summer season and provide some world-class surf for more experienced surfers. For the less experienced, this beach is great for learning to surf and offers plenty of flat-water spots for recreational paddling. The beach lies close to several popular wineries, olive groves and Margaret River attractions and is the perfect spot to spend a day in the sun.

There is no reason not to get up early on your weekend away as you’ll be able to get your hands on some delicious coffee and fresh pastries.
Whale Watching

Maragret River in Australia is one of the best places for whale watching. The Margaret River is located on the coast of Western Australia and is famous for its majestic waves, rolling hills, vineyards, wineries, and its array of wildlife. The region is home to more than 39 cetacean species, most commonly Southern Rights, Humpback Whales, and Killer Whales. Many whale-watching companies offer tours of the region in boats or on land, depending on the visitor’s needs. There are also opportunities to view whales in their natural environment from the air or onboard a seaplane. The best time for whale watching in the Margaret River is from June to October.
Snorkeling
Margaret River has some of the best snorkeling and diving spots in Western Australia. There are some fantastic reefs, swim-throughs, and wall dives off the coast of Margaret River which offer breathtaking views of the marine world. Popular species for snorkels include sea stars, sea cucumbers, nudibranchs, moray eels, seahorses, weever and flathead fish, oysters, sea anemones and abundant coral. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse

The Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is located on the rocky coast of Augusta in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. Constructed in 1895 and automated in 1984, the tower stands at a height of 29 meters. It is the second tallest lighthouse in the state, marking the point where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. It also serves as a permanent reminder of the shipwrecks that have taken place along this treacherous stretch of coastline. Visitors to the lighthouse can enjoy the stunning views, take lighthouse tours and a variety of other activities.
Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse

Constructed in 1903m it is one of the oldest lighthouses in the state. Located in Dunsborough, it is well known for being the longest continually operational lighthouse in Western Australia. The lighthouse is still in operation to this day, managed and maintained by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. You can even book a guided tour of the lighthouse. You will learn about the maritime navigation systems used and the importance of the local ocean currents. These are also used by humpback whales during migration and the breeding season.
Karri Forest
The Margaret River Karri forest is a protected area in the South West of Western Australia. It is a diverse forest of Karri trees, subalpine shrubs and ferns, with some spectacular wildflowers. This unique forest covers an area of over 200,000 hectares and is home to many unique plant and animal species. Within the Margaret River Karri forest visitors can explore waterfalls, swimming holes, and ancient limestone formations. The forest is also home to some rare and endangered plant species, as well as many mammals and birds. The Margaret River Karri forest is a popular tourist destination and has become a protected and culturally significant area.
Prevelly
A coastal town situated in the Margaret River region, known for gorgeous white sand beaches, world class surf and stunning cliff lines. It is home to the iconic Margaret River Pro, an international surfing contest that takes place every year. You can even take a surf lesson or two yourself! Aside from surfing, the beach offers plenty of beach activities, like swimming, surfing, kayaking and fishing. Road Trip along Caves Road
Caves Road is one of the main tourist attractions in Margaret River, running 97km from Busselton in the west to Augusta in the east. Along the way, you can visit some of the region’s renowned wineries, caves, restaurants and beaches. Home to a variety of unique wildlife and plant species, making it ideal for nature lovers. Along Caves Road you will pass through the towns of Ironstone, Karridale, Cowaramup, Prevelly, and Gracetown on your way to Augusta. Explore Yallingup

A popular coastal town located in the heart of Margaret River in Western Australia. It is an incredible destination for amazing sightseeing, outdoor adventures and delicious food and wines. Busselton Jetty

The Margaret River Busselton Jetty is a 6 km artificial jetty constructed in Busselton, Western Australia. It is the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, and is one of the longest timber-piled jetties in the world. Take a stroll along the 1.8 kilometre jetty and marvel at the jetty’s underwater observatory before embarking on a thrilling jetty train ride to reach the end of the jetty! Follow the story of Busselton Jetty with an interactive Interpretation centre where you can learn all about the Jetty’s history, from the first settlers to the present. Don’t forget to grab a bite to eat at the Jetty Cafe before you leave!
Boranup Forest

An incredible natural destination located in the Margaret River Region of Western Australia. Surfers Point
One of the most popular surf spots in the area and is located just a short drive south of Downtown Margaret River. It offers good waves for experienced surfers and can be quite a challenging spot during periods of larger swell. There are a few different breaks located at the point, making it suitable for a variety of different surfers. The most popular break is the left-hand point break which is usually the one getting the most attention.
